A la recherche du geeks perdu

For a museum of a quite different sort, visit the Space Station Museum on the corner of Victoria Street West and Nelson Street. It is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm and has a series of well presented and painstakingly detailed models of characters from all the most popular science fiction films and television shows including Star Wars, Dr Who, the Fantastic Voyage and Thunderbirds. At present the museum is only in its first stage of development. Future plans include a life size replica of the bridge of the Enterprise and another gallery of models.
Metro Guide to Auckland :
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Auckland but Didn't Know Where to Find Out!
1989, p31

Is anybody out there? Can anyone remember this place? What was it like? Where did it go? Was it quite as ridiculous as it seems?

Answers on a postcard to the usual address. And remember: in Space, nobody can hear you wince.

I don't remember that at all, and as I was working at Metro in 1989 I probably wrote some of the guide.

But I'm sure it was every bit as ridiculous as you imagine.

Whoa, four-year-old me would have been utterly keen for that.

It was indeed every bit as ridiculous as you'd imagine, but also kind of awesome. There was a back room which was used as a venue for Dr Who video marathons. Closed down around the end of 1990 - I'm surprised it lasted that long.

Which corner was it on? I'd guess the corner that's now the home of the Victopia apartment.

This reminds me of Microworld. It was a tourist attraction down by the Viaduct (before it was "the Viaduct") and consisted of a whole lot of high-powered microscopes which which you could view things like insects, human skin, a ripped $10 note.

Microworld was pretty cool for its time, kind of like a Science Alive with pretty cutting-edge technology. It was the brainchild of a bunch of technically clued-up but financially naive people who fell victim to a very nasty asset stripper. The whole debacle was documented in a nicely done Metro article back in the day.
