Guns don't kill people; Socialists kill people.
The inevitable response of many rightist blogs to the Virginia Tech killings has been to propose Chuck Norris solutions: lecturers with concealed handguns taking down the perp (which of course they could not do because of those pinko leftie restrictions on good honest citizens having guns). Somebody really ought to tell them that movies are not real.

I do find it fascinating the extreme Right (which, to be controversial, I will say includes the Libertarians) seem to think that having everyone else be armed would have solved the whole issue. It occurs to me that had there been other armed members of the public at Virginia Tech it might equally have ended up a bigger, not smaller, bloodbath.
I am trying to get my mind around what arming lecturers with handguns would do for Lacanian academics (one of whose tenets is "whoever has the phallus has the power"), not to mention for the existing tensions between academic and general staff, which currently cohere around scales of pay and associated conditions, rather than whose employment agreement entitles them to pack heat.
This shit is bananas.

It seems more easily imagined than my slipping a loaded handgun between my OHTs and the course reader, all in the little plastic basket I use to carry my materials to lectures.
What worries me is that the people advocating the militarisation of the groves of academe are those who normally complain about those very same groves being infested with politically-correct pinko liberals.
Do they want Post Modernists with guns? Do they not realise what happens when academics attack?
